Business Development Underwriter – Commercial Lines (Property & Liability)

As a member of the Business Development Underwriting team, you will join a group of experienced technical specialists focused on underwriting Commercial Combined, Property, and Liability risks, particularly within the public sector and related entities.
Working directly with clients and through broker partnerships, you will identify and secure new business opportunities that align with our underwriting appetite. You’ll collaborate closely with internal teams across Customer, Pricing, and Portfolio Management to deliver on growth targets and contribute to the company’s overall business development strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Underwrite new Commercial, Property, and Liability business in a profitable and compliant manner across a broad range of sectors.
- Assess and evaluate risks within delegated underwriting authority, negotiating terms to win and retain target prospects.
- Work closely with Sales and Distribution teams to identify and convert new business opportunities.
- Conduct detailed portfolio and pricing analysis to ensure optimal performance across both direct and broker accounts.
- Deliver high-quality service, meeting agreed KPIs and service standards.
- Support team development by mentoring junior underwriters and providing training on underwriting practices, market insights, and competitor activity.
- Manage day-to-day underwriting tasks, including mid-term adjustments and account servicing.
- Maintain a deep understanding of the market and contribute to the ongoing development of underwriting strategy.
Your Profile:
- Proven experience in general insurance with specific exposure to Commercial Property and Liability underwriting.
- CIP qualified (or working toward a relevant industry qualification).
- Demonstrated success in a new business underwriting role, with a strong track record of achieving growth targets.
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Strong commercial acumen and ability to build lasting broker and client relationships.
- Experience in a new business environment within commercial or general insurance is highly desirable.
